On September 9, 2011, the Students of Veritas Academy will cover the downtown area to clean-up and give back to the community. Downtown Texarkana will be getting a "spruce up" and 1st Choice Pregnancy Center and Harvest Texarkana Food Bank will be served in the afternoon..
Last year, students broke up into teams to cover large areas up and down Broad Street and beyond. They had brooms, dust pans, trash bags and rags. They picked up trash, scrubbed windows, weeded sidewalks, and cleared abandoned lots. Kidtopia park also received a washdown. Students had a great time learning about the value of community service.
Students were also in charge of finding community sponsors for their day of service. Each student's goal was to raise $300. The school raised almost $15,000 last year for this event.
Here are a few links to news stories about our serve-a-thon from last year.
"The worker bees have been by our office at 424 West Broad. It is such a privilege to have these young people in our community! Go Veritas!" Rene Tuesburg Schmitt
