Extracurricular
Veritas students enjoy many fun-filled events throughout the school year. From Teen Court to Track and Field Day, there’s always something exciting to look forward to.
Ice Cream Social
We open the school year with an informal get-together, a highlight of the new school year! It’s a time for new families to be introduced to the Veritas community, and for our more “seasoned” families to get reacquainted. Our administrators start the evening off with a brief introduction to the school, then everyone heads over to the lunchroom to talk, laugh, and fill up on as much ice cream as he can hold. Veritas students look forward to this evening all summer long.
Weekly Chapel
Every Monday morning, the students come to school clothed in their formal uniforms and gather in the Sanctuary to hear the Word of God and sing His praise. Chapel sets the tone for the rest of the week, as the entire school body worships the Lord. Parents, grandparents and friends are always welcome to join the students in Chapel.
Teen Court
Veritas secondary students regularly participate in Teen Court as volunteers. Teen Court is a legally-binding alternative system of justice that offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for their offenses through community service, educational classes, and jury service. This allows them to avoid fines and sentences handed down by the criminal justice system. Teen Court tries Real Cases with Real Consequences. Teen Court is a "hands on" educational opportunity that allows both offenders and teen volunteers to better understand our system of justice. Teen Court meets 2 Monday nights per month at 6 p.m. in the Bi-state Justice Building. (903-798-3941)
Community Service
As the opportunities arise, Veritas students will go into the community to help others. This has taken several forms in the past, such as assisting hurricane victims and refugee shelters. Veritas students also serve as well-respected ushers at many performances held at the historic Perot Theatre in Texarkana.
Mount Olympus Reunion
November will find an unusual sight on the Veritas campus. A number of mythological gods and goddesses will suddenly appear around the school, usually staring at scripts and practicing lines under their breaths. Every year the third grade, studying ancient history, will practice and perform their Mount Olympus Reunion. They are assisted by the fourth grade. The costumes are elaborate, and the stage is beautiful! If you are in Texarkana in mid-November, it is well worth a trip to come and watch this delightful production by Veritas third and fourth graders.
Christmas Ball
A formal occasion for secondary students to dress and be ladies and gentlemen, and have fun as well.
Christmas Program/Drama
For the past several years Veritas Academy has put on a wonderful Christmas production featuring all the students in the school. From a Medieval Christmas celebration to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, these productions always put the school in a holiday mood.
Open House
Throughout the year, Veritas hosts several Open Houses, specifically designed to give parents a glimpse of what goes on in the classrooms day by day. The students will demonstrate for their parents the various techniques used daily in the classroom by their teachers. Songs, chants, and sound-offs dominate the elementary demonstrations, while the secondary students engage in an example of “The Great Discussion,” a continuation of the debate-style learning so common in historical schooling. Parents and grandparents benefit from this enlightening evening, which demonstrates how different the teaching techniques are with a Classical Christian education.
Senior Thesis Readings
Each Senior is required by Veritas Academy to write a thesis on any subject they choose and present their papers for a distinguished panel. The senior pulls together all the different aspects of his education from Veritas Academy and shows his ability, as an individual made by his Creator, to think and learn for himself. This event happens at the end of the senior year.
Track and Field Day
Each Spring, a group of parents and teachers work together to organize the annual Track and Field Day. This is a day dedicated to games, activities, and friendly competition. The entire school is divided into teams, with both big and little kids on the same team! Track and Field Day is usually planned around a theme: in the past, themes have included Extreme Challenge, Medieval Challenge, Presidential Race, Star Wars and War of the Worlds. This day is much anticipated throughout the year!
End-of-the-Year Program
The culmination of the year’s efforts, Veritas Academy’s End-of-the-Year Program brings together the best of the students’ talents. Songs, recitations, and poetry, usually on a common theme, are the features of this program.
Italy Adventure
Every 2 years the senior and junior classes work and raise money toward their “Italy Adventure". This trip is the culmination of many years’ hard work and perseverance in Classical education. Mrs. Diana Morriss, Veritas’ secondary Latin teacher, is the point person for this fun and educational experience. She leads the group of seniors through a historically important tour of European countries and cities, and the students come home with a renewed love of history and travel. Past trips have included the destinations of London, Rome and Athens.
